back in the saddle.

Hello hello! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend. This weekend was our first full weekend in Providence since the middle of June. We were thrilled to sample the summer menu at our favorite restaurant downtown and get some time to organize our lives a bit. If you follow me on instagram, you might have seen the other activity in my weekend: the Providence Rock'n'Roll Half Marathon.

About two months ago, I shared a post with you about my love of running. I haven't given much in the way of updates because we've been all over the place the entire summer. I also was a little anxious I might have had another brush with my pesky tibial stress fracture. My physical therapist gave me the go-ahead for this weekend, so I went for it yesterday and managed to get a PR! I was over the moon!

I'm still aiming for the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October, but I just have to pay close attention so I don't kill my tibia any day soon. I'll be visiting my PT regularly to make sure I'm squared away. I also bought some reasonably priced insoles from Spenco to help with my gait. The one thing I wanted to ask all of you {whether you're a runner or not!} is about taking a trip to the chiropractor. If you've gone, has it helped you? I met someone at the running expo this weekend who thinks I might be a bit misaligned {thus making me prone to re-fracture} and that a chiropractor might be able to help. I'm a little skeptical, but I know you all will help me make the right choice.

For those of you non-runners, thank you for bearing with this post. Running is a big part of my life, so I couldn't help but share this little slice of excitement ;) Many thanks for your love yesterday and today!

  1. Congrats!!! That is so exciting and what a great goal to reach. Good for you! I'm a runner, but have never had any serious injuries so I've never needed to go to the chiropractor but I believe my dad has gone and back when he was still running, it helped him. Hope it all feels better and congrats on your PR!

  2. I'm not a fan of the chiropractor, but if you're needing inserts for your shoes.. go see a podiatrist. the custom made ones are worth the money (usually around $200) and last a lot longer than store bought inserts. They also make your whole body feel a lot better because you are properly aligned. Plus it's always best to get your feet checked out before you get into serious running. I never knew I had flat feet until I ended up with a stress fracture from over use.. one I got myself the right pair of shoes that the doctor recommended and custom inserts, I was good to go!

  5. Congrats on the PR!! That is amazing! I've never been to the chiropractor, but have a couple of running buddies that swear by it. Might be worth a shot at the very least!! Good luck with the rest of your training and the big race in October.

  6. congratulations on your PR! i ran my first half last june and it was a thrill to finish! i did go to the chiropractor regularly when i was rowing in college and it really helped me a lot, but that was for a back injury that i ignored, and then i overcompensated with other muscles and ended up all out of whack. good luck!

  7. Congrats on the PR, that is AMAZING!!! You should be so, so proud of yourself :)

And as far as Chiropractors go, definitely go for it, but ask for recommendations for good ones in your area first. We have one that my whole family uses in California and he literally works wonders! I already have an appointment booked for my trip back :)

  8. That's awesome! I did the Rock and Roll 1/2 in DC and LOVED it. Such a fun & well organized race. I can only imagine the route in Providence is beautiful. I went to a chiropractor for a few months. It felt good and helped for the few hours (maybe days) after my appointment, but I wasn't noticing long term effects so I stopped going. Some people swear by it, so I guess it varies by person. Wishing you good health :)

  10. Congrats! My boyfriend is getting into marathons and while I'm not a runner myself I'll be glad to cheer him on :) I vote YES on the chiropractor. I was skeptical too but just a few days after going I noticed vast improvements. I was getting chronic back pain and headaches and after re-aligning vertebrae in my neck my headaches disappeared completely. I also noticed huge improvements in my back pain. For me, the results lasted a few months before needing another appointment so I'd definitely give it a shot.

  11. Congrats on the PR!!! That's so exciting! I've never been to a chiropractor, so unfortunately I have zero advice in that department. I hope your tibia holds up for you, though, for the marathon in October!

  12. I'm always impressed by runners, especially since I can't even run 1 mile without feeling like I can't breathe. Good for you and congrats!

  13. So glad to hear you were able to do a race! I am lucky to have not encountered any major running injuries but am paranoid about them - because it would be so hard to have to give it up. There's not much better than the feeling of completing a big race, and a PR to boot!

  14. I LOVE MY CHIROPRACTOR! I hurt my back in March and I should have gone then. My back pain finally got really bad the beginning of July so i went. I saw him three times a week for a few weeks and then twice a week and now I am seeing him once a week (and after this week it should be down to once a month.) I am amazed by how well it worked. You just have to be willing to listen to everything they say or it will take longer. I couldn't exercise for the first two weeks he was working with me and it drove me nuts.

Email me if you have any other questions. Congrats on the race!
