Love or hate John Mayer, Split Screen Sadness was one of those songs which got me through more than one lonely night away from {cv} during our long distance days. It may not be the most hopeful of songs, but this lyric in particular hit me to the core.... every. single. time.
**If you're wondering, I changed it to because--'cause doesn't meet my grammar requirements ;) Sorry {jm}.
When {cv} was in North Carolina and I was in DC, this lyric comforted me on so many occasions. Regardless of the miles between us, we could see the same sky. I find myself taking this concept for granted now that we're together in Rhode Island, but it only takes a night away for me to regain that perspective. Even if you're not a John Mayer fan, but I don't think you can argue with this concept. I seriously look at the stars in a whole different light because of these 19 little words. Thank you, {jm}.
As an aside, I have plenty of stories lined up for you in the {distance makes the heart grow fonder series}. Don't worry...it's not going anywhere. I just missed reflecting about our experiences, so I hope you don't mind me stepping in today.

That is so sweet! John Mayer gets me everytime. I haven't had a long distance relationship since college, but certain song lyrics like this always pull on my heart strings... The song "Fix You" by Coldplay and "This Years Love" by David Gray are the ones that always seem to make my eyes water!
ReplyDeleteIn Your Atmosphere by John Mayer is "our song". SO typical. OH and "watch the wind blow by" by Tim McGraw.
ReplyDeleteWhen my husband and I were apart every summer during college I would always try and pick a song to be our song for the summer. I would set it as my ringtone and listen to it throughout the work day to make myself feel better. One summer I chose Kiss Me Thru the Phone by Soulja Boy. It's super silly but hearing it every time he called put an instant smile on my face. Plus it's seriously catchy so it was always stuck in my head reminding me that he was on the other end of the phone whenever I needed him! Songs are a great way to ease the pressure of separation.
ReplyDeleteLiterally, this song!!!! And the entire album... When my high school boyfriend and I went away to separate colleges, our first year was pretty rocky, and as you can guess, things didn't pan out. But still, we spent most of that first year sending songs back and forth. After we broke up, I couldn't listen to John Mayer for years or I would get sad.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about John Mayer. I used to listen to his music when Luke & I were long distance. I especially love these lyrics :)
ReplyDeleteHe is seriously my favorite singer. I love his new song out right now called Shadow Days. LOVE him. I love that quote you have, too!!! xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteYou know, that song gets me too! When Ryan and I were apart, this song made me feel a little better more than a few times. I'm still upset that I don't get to see John this year. Hopefully he'll get better soon, because going more than a year without seeing him would pretty much be a crime!
ReplyDeleteThat's probably my favorite song of his. You hit the nail on the head with this one. Can't wait to see you tonight!
ReplyDelete"The Luckiest" by Ben Folds is an amazing song that always pulls at my heartstrings. BUT John Mayer has always been a favorite, especially "Split Screen Sadness" or "Wheel."
ReplyDeleteso sweet!! totally agree with sam on "the luckiest." also love jm's "st patrick's day" because that's the day we met. j made me a mix tape (well he sent me an itunes playlist) of songs after we met and those short months of long distance def got me through :)
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend and I have been long distance for 5 years and John Mayer (and this song specifically) help me get through the long nights. Love this reminder. :)
ReplyDeleteI love him AND that song!
ReplyDeleteEven now that John and I live in SF, I keep Baltimore (where we met), Dallas (his hometown), West Point (where his parents have a home), Princeton (my hometown), and Providence (where my parents have a home) on my iPhone weather reports–there's something about knowing!
ReplyDeleteLove how you updated for grammar; I would have done the same! :) Great quote...
ReplyDeleteI love John Mayer! The song that I always identify with to a core is Move Along by All American Rejects.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved that song! Those lyrics always get me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet, sweet blog! Just stumbled upon it this morning... My husband and I dated long-distance for 5 years!! I love that you are inspiring others who are doing the same. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this! For the past year, my guy and I have been over 2300 miles apart. To help, I always think of a little song with a similar concept that my Granny taught me when I was little:
ReplyDeleteI see the moon and the moon sees me;
The moon sees the somebody I can't see.
Shine on the one who waits for me;
Shine on the one that I love.
i'm so happy i found this blog and people i can relate to lol
ReplyDeletei've been in a long distance relationship for 4 years nj to michigan and most of my friends can never understand it. the one song that makes me think of him is kinda old its save tonight by eagle eye cherry
