Happy Wednesday, all :) I'm so happy to be back with another installment in my {distance makes the heart grow fonder} series. This week, I'm featuring S and Taylor {from Anticipation!}--an adorable pair of high school sweethearts who have learned to manage the miles between their colleges for more than three years. You're sure to love all the sweet photos and their story of perseverance, so read on...
Name: Taylor
Significant Other's Name: "S"
When did you start dating? February 2008--right after Valentine's Day! {Funnily enough, we actually met in 2005, when we were just high school freshmen! I was a nerd sitting in the back of our science class. One day, our teacher changed the seats and put S right in front of me!}
At what point did you begin dating long distance? After a few years of being just friends, we started dating in the winter of our senior year in high school. I loved every aspect of being 'high school sweethearts.' Once we finished the school year, I had to go to college early for summer session classes. It broke my heart, but S stayed strong for me. We had a foretaste of living apart, opposed to living a breezy ten minutes apart from each other.
How do you fill your days while you're apart? S and I always stay in touch. Even though we both have busy college schedules, we make it a priority to talk with one another. Though we both do our own things at our respective schools, he will send me sweet little texts throughout the day that make me smile. Once our days are over, we finally get to chat on the phone. There is nothing like collapsing on my bed after a long day and talking with S about our days. Since I am a bit old-fashioned and a lover of romance, I sometimes write S cutesy snail mail. It reminds me of high school, when we would swap notes between classes.
What do you find most difficult about being long distance? The first year of college was the hardest for me. S goes to a big college and I go to a much smaller one. It was a hard to make two simultaneous adjustments: being apart from one another and adjusting to the different lifestyles at a big school vs. a little school! Thankfully, we made it work...and ever since, each consecutive year is infinitely easier. We now see each other more often--and I couldn't be happier!
How has long distance changed your relationship? It has changed it but only for the better. My grandfather once told me that absence makes the heart grow fonder. His wisdom always comes when I think back about our years apart. I appreciate the little things when we are together, like holding hands and watching TV. I miss being able to go for a walk around the neighborhood together, go out to eat, or spending time with our families. We have learned to savor those moments of normalcy as much as we can!
What do you enjoy most about the time you have together? I love the fact that we can come home without seeing each other for weeks (and sometimes months!), but we don't miss a beat. We are still on the same track! We make each other laugh with our usual jokes, quoting from our favorite shows and movies. S has always make me laugh, even when I first met him during our freshman year of high school!
Is there any end in sight to your long distance days? Graduation means the end of our long distance days, though our graduations don’t match up exactly. I will graduate in May 2012 and S will graduate one semester later. We are then free from school! I am excited to graduate, probably more than your average student. In the future, we want to continue to soak up every moment together. We plan on traveling after we’re both done with school. One of the best parts of "us" is our spontaneity, so we are excited to see where life will take us!
I seriously can't thank Taylor enough for sharing their story! I am so grateful this series is striking a chord with so many of you--I promise to get back to all of you who emailed {and might email soon!} about your chance to showcase your tale of survival :) Enjoy your Wednesday--it's one day closer to Friday!
