I feel the furthest away from home on holidays. Carrying on a long distance relationship with your mother is never easy--and I'm the first to admit that I'm not the greatest at it. I'm always running in a million directions and not always able to focus on her the way I wish I could. It doesn't take away the fact I have learned everything I know from my mother.
I always tried to think I knew better when I was young--and let's be honest--I didn't. There were plenty of occasions when I should have listened to her and chose differently. Now, I understand that I had to make those choices so I could fully appreciate her wisdom and guidance. She has sacrificed so much on my behalf over the years and has stopped at nothing to give me everything I ever needed--and for that, I'm eternally grateful.
The distance between us seems infinitely smaller now with technology like Skype, but it doesn't mean that I don't miss the hugs only my mother can give. I miss seeing that spark in her eye when she's truly proud of me. I feel an emptiness every day that I never anticipated having when I was 20--when I didn't quite understand her. I am so grateful to have her in my life and only wish the miles between Indiana and Rhode Island weren't so long.
These days, when {cv} says I sound just like my mother, I smile. My mother has a beautiful soul--and to be considered in the same realm is an honor. I know Mother's Day is a tough day for her since her mother is gone. I only hope this post can bring a smile to her face when she sees it--and remind her all her hard work has paid off {or at least I like to think so!}.
So, thank you Mom...
for my curly hair.
for teaching me how to happy skip.
for believing I'd come around one day.
for what you've given up for me.
for your encouragement.
for your understanding.
for your love.
for everything.
Though we're not together today, just know you're always with me.
I love you with every ounce of my heart.
xoxo {av}
Sweetest post ever!
ReplyDeleteI can relate to you on: being far away from my mother
and learning everything I know from my mother
appreciating her wisdon and guidance
If someone also said to me I sound like my mother, I would also smile because that's all I want to be. As kind, honorable, sweet and loving as that woman.
My mothers mum also passed away, so I can also imagine it's a tough day for her too. :(
LOVELY POST! (",)

My mother and I also have a long distance relationship (she is in North Carolina and I'm in DC) so I can relate 100%. This post is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteI love this post! My mom and I are likewise long distance: she in southern California and me in St. Louis. I definitely cherish the times we have together (she is coming to visit in 9 days!) and we both get a little teary when it comes time to say goodbye again :)
ReplyDeleteHope you had a great weekend!
