In May 2007, I found a phenomenal pair of shorts at Old Navy {yes, Old Navy} that lasted me four summers. I got compliments almost every time I wore them and it broke my heart to retire them at the end of last year. They weren't anything special to look at but they certainly did the trick. Those khaki linen-esque shorts changed my opinion of that whole genre of pants.
Prior to that summer, I always had a little thing against my legs. I don't know what it was, but I just didn't like seeing them. I would wear jeans at the heights of DC and Indiana summers, just so I wouldn't have to wear shorts. Thankfully, on that fateful trip to Old Navy, my eyes were opened. Now, I'm a HUGE fan. Judging by my loot from a recent trip to J.Crew, one might deem me borderline obsessed. Here's where I need your help though...
How do you bring bolder patterned shorts into your every day rotation?
How short is too short? What's your guideline?
Are there any places you won't wear shorts?
Yes, that was a barrage of questions. Feel free to answer as many {or as few} as you wish. I'm just wanting the new standard of short acceptability. Back in high school, we had the "fingertip" length rule, so now I'm wondering if such a rule exists in "real" life.
Can't wait to hear your opinions! In the few short {pardon the pun!} months I've had this blog, I've learned so much from each and every one of you that I knew you all were the perfect people to ask!
Get excited for another post from the Holy City tomorrow--until then, don't forget to grab all the entries you can for my lovely french-inspired giveaway! It ends in less than a week! Have a great Tuesday--and thanks in advance for all of your help :) xoxo {av}
Love shorts with pretty bows!

Bold & beautiful wins in my book! And the rules include, if it looks amazing on you, then wear it! xox!

I'm with your old view on the whole shorts thing- I just don't really like them on me- much prefer skirts. If I do wear them though, I like them a bit longer so that they sit in between the thigh and knee. I do love the look of cute shorts on others though. From your choices, I'm going to have to go with the first group- just really in love with blushy neutrals these days.
ReplyDeletenautral all the way - always have been. but those bold shorts are pretty good too. might have to think about picking up a pair this summer. great post! xo kendall
ReplyDeleteI am not a huge fan of shorts, at least on me that is! I would much prefer to wear a skirt or capris! But I think you can get away with whatever you feel comfortable wearing!
ReplyDeleteI like the 5" j.crew shorts. I think patterned ones are super fun but they're easily rememberable so I don't feel like you can wear them with as much.
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous, specially the 3rd one and the polka dots one. I am with you on the short issues, I didn't start wearing them until last summer, I like my legs but I just felt uncomfortable showing them.
ReplyDeleteI am with you! I used not to wear shorts that much, but in the past few years I have thought they are super cute! I will always normally opt to wear a sundress, but I want to get some more shorts for this summer! I saw some people pull off some really cute shorts this past winter with tights and heels. I really like those gold ones!!
ReplyDeleteI think bold patterns need to be paired with plain tops and fun shoes. Well how short is too short...if you bend over and your butt check it hanging out it's too short and shorts should never be hiked up to high as to contribute to the whole camel toe effect. I don't wear shorts to work. Good luck finding another favorite pair.
ReplyDeleteOH MY - the first two pairs are AMAZING :) stunning post!

Oh shorts. I love them and hate them. I usually buy neutral but have visions of bold colors like a bright red or bright coral color for summer. I can not, however, find these to buy.
ReplyDeleteI always prefer longer shorts. How short it too short?...I don't know how to answer that because everyone is build different. But I would say most shorts I see people wearing are TOO short.
I think short shorts look cute if they are high wasted. High wasted and long...that's frumpy. The worst shorts of those that are low wasted and super short. You might as well walk out in your underwear...it's not pretty...it's slutty.
I love neutral shorts! It's so easy to wear a fun top with them.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe you used to wear jeans in D.C. in the summer. You are crazy!! Haha! It is SO hot. My sister lives there and I refused to visit her from May-September (just kidding). I just hate the humidity, I'm a big baby about it!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
I often find that I can't find shorts that fit me. They are either too tight in the thighs or far too big in the waist. I live in sundresses and flowy skirts.
xo
i love the shorts you picked because they aren't super tight around the upper thigh - i think that's everyone's problem area! neautral shades are so fun too because you can pair them with anything whether it be casual or slightly elegant. love the polka dotties too! :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those gold shorts!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI JUST posted about shorts today too!! I struggle with whether I can wear them to work or not... But I do love them!

I literally like every pair you posted. If I wear solid shorts I wear a more dramatic top (ie- colors, pattern, texture) and if I wear a pattern short I wear a basic and solid top...generally I don't like too short but I think mid-thigh does the trick for most people. And if you wear wedges at night with silky-esque shorts you can definitely wear them out to dinner and/or a lounge/bar!
ReplyDeletethose neutral shorts are amazing (i looooove the first pair). i imagined all the "bold" shorts with a plain white tank top and bright accessories. the fingertip rule is still a good one, but sometimes longer/shorter is cute too. i am soooo excited for shorts weather. being from FL, I have 2 drawers of shorts that I will not part with.
ReplyDeleteI have short legs, so I like the short shorts, but I LOVE the longer shorts on the ladies who can pull them off! :) xx

I'm such a sucker for denim short-shorts! I'm so sad that in a few years, it won't be socially acceptable for me to wear them so much, but I loveeee them. Maybe I'll transition to grown-up silk shorts when I hit my late twenties. I do love the boucle shorts from Shopbop you picked out on the bottom right!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Too short is when you can see butt cheek. Or when my mom tells me to go upstairs and change because I'm a lady, damn it.
I love this post! I have such a variety of shorts (denim, patterned, neutral, short, long, destroyed) and they all get great use! Too short is if your tooshie is hanging out...I just use my best judgment :P The shorter ones I try to pair with flats instead of sky high heels. I actually started spring cleaning and decided to part ways with some of my shorts for being too short and it was sad because I totally still loved them!
ReplyDeletei'm a neutral kind of gal. then you can do whatever you want on top. and i am not a fan of too short shorts... might be cause i's got short little legs.
ReplyDeleteI was a soft and neutral sorta girl in past summers but this summer I'm all about the bold and beautiful! I don't necessarily have rules about shorts. As long as my butt isn't showing, I'm fine. Haha.
ReplyDeletehonestly, because I wear a veil, I can never wear shorts when I go out. But since you ask, I think the most important thing is you have to be comfortable in it. I believe that the definition of 'too short' on every one is different. And dont forget to sit when you try it on cause your short will be even shorter, right? Do you still feel comfortable? If yes, then it's not too short, I think. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm liking the last pair of striped shorts. Ahhh, so happy short season is on it's way!
ReplyDeleteI've never been a fan of shorts (on me). I just can't seem to find the right fit, they are usually too tight on my legs. I do love all the pictures you have in your post, some of those might work for me!
ReplyDeleteI die for the bloomer shorts (first set). Amazing!!!! These are all so adorable! xoxo
ReplyDeletekind of in love with them all! And we both should have them all because they are so different! If only my favorite ones werent 200 dollars!
ReplyDeletegreat finds
xoxo em
I'm a soft & neutral kinda girl, normally paired with a white tank, and I accessorize like crazy with flops & jewelry. Unfortunately, pregancy rendered my legs hideous above the knee, so I stick to capris, bermudas and knee length skirts now. God...I shudder to think of the tiny shorts and mini's I wore just 3 summers ago ;-)
ReplyDeleteLove your blog ~ Traci
I have never been a fan of wearing shorts...I LOVE skirts but just never find shorts flattering on me. I'm always on the lookout for a good pair. I think if you pair some bold shorts with a neutral top, like a white blouse, it can be easy to make it part of your everyday.
ReplyDeletei'm not a huge fan of shorts, i'm more of a bermuda or capri kinda girl... some of the neutral ones are quite cute...
ReplyDeleteI love the neutral shorts selection. I love shorts in the summer. I find them to be unprofessional worn in the office though.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely more of a soft & neutral gal myself and I strongly believe that shorts should got at least to your fingertips if you're over the age of 15. I had a great pair of linen shorts from Lucky that had a drawstring on it and were a great length...sadly they've been retired since last summer...the material was thin and kept ripping! :(
ReplyDeleteI despise shorts. I have fat legs, & while I look fine-ish standing up, when I sit down, it's a huge blubbery mess. It's disappointing, because so many shorts are so darn cute, cute... just no. I can't do it.
ReplyDeletei am a big shorts person.. esp when its warm out :) i love the pleated or belted pairs this season. xoxo jcd :: cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI'm loving both, but my fave has def got to be the soft and neutrals and lately I have a big thing for losely tied oversized bows on shorts... so cute!

Those pearly-gold shorts are amazing. I never wear shorts because I also have a thing about my legs - but if I didn't, I'd wear them everywhere. Tailored shorts and heels look so impeccably stylish at evening get-togethers - I'm so envious of anyone who can pull off the look.

PS: Head over to my blog to help send me to Rosemount Australian Fashion Week!
I love that shorts have made a come back. Last summer, I lived in some stretchy jean shorts from Urban and got lots of compliments on them. I like my legs though, I'd rather show off my legs by wearing shorts or skirts and pair them with long sleeved shirts because I'm not such a fan of my arms!
ReplyDeleteI think you can pull off the bold, printed shorts. Just pair them with a simple tank or look around for inspiration on other blogs/pinterest - you know you're bound to see some!
as i've recently hit the "mid-to-late-20's" and have birthed two children, i prefer bermuda shorts or capri shorts if i'm going to go that route. like you, i've had that *thing* against my legs for some reason.
ReplyDeletei love the khaki shorts ;)
I loved shorts, but had one too many mildly/significantly terrifying experiences wearing them in Baltimore; being chased by a drunk who shouted my shorts were "devilish" and that I was "askin' fer it" stands out as the experience with the most impact...
ReplyDeleteLuckily shorts are almost never seasonally appropriate in SF!
i love all 3 in the top row, the polka dots, and last one by Dallin Chase. Great picks!!
ReplyDeleteGreat choices!! My thoughts are...
ReplyDeleteHow do you bring bolder patterned shorts into your every day rotation? With solid tops, sandals, and long necklaces.
How short is too short? What's your guideline? I think that when you get to be in your late twenties, the fingertip rule applies once again. Shorter than that is usually too short.
Are there any places you won't wear shorts? No matter what the retailers suggest, it's not ok in an office. Even with heels. :-/

CUTE! i find that the soft & neutrals work best for me, for shorts that is. <3 EverRubyGirl.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteAwww shorts season! Yay! For work we can only wear dress capris and skirts that cover your knee! Which is way to strict if you ask me. The minute I get home from work I'm going to break out the shorts!
ReplyDeleteI legitimately buy a pair of jcrew solid shorts every single time I go to the outlet. I have every color at this point, it's absurd. Purple? Yes. Green? Yes. Favorites: mustard and Salmon. Not together. Not even in the food world. I'm rambling. Look what shorts do to me!
ReplyDeleteso funny you posted this because i just posted an outfit with shorts and tights and had a few questions of my own. I have a love/hate relationship with shorts. it's really important that they fit in a flattering way first of all. then i love both simple and bold style for different occasions. :)

i wander, i wonder
i bout a pair of shorts like this today from jcrew! i can't wait to wear them.
ReplyDeleteI love all the neutral colored shorts! They are great for spring.
